New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission

New Jersey

New Jersey provides a structured pathway for individuals aiming to secure a learner's permit or driver's license. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) is the governing body that administers this process, ensuring all applicants meet the necessary criteria.

Driver Education Classes

In New Jersey, driver education classes are available in many high schools. Additionally, there are numerous licensed driving schools throughout the state. If you are enrolled in a behind-the-wheel driver training course, you can obtain a special learner's permit at age 16.

Initial Permit Steps

  1. Make an appointment for a Permit.

  2. Bring your documents and get your permit.

Knowledge Test

  1. Make an appointment for a Knowledge Test.

  2. Bring your documents and take your knowledge test.

  3. A vision test is also required.

Practice Driving

After passing the knowledge test, you can make an appointment for your road test. The practice period lasts for 6 months (or 3 months if you're over 21).

Road Test

  1. If you fail, you can re-test in 14 days.

  2. If you pass, your permit will be stamped, and you can proceed to the next step.

Probationary Driver's License

You can either get your Probationary Driver's License at the location of your road test or at any Licensing Center with your stamped permit and your documents.

Supervised and Unsupervised Driving Rules

  • Supervised driving requires the presence of an adult supervising driver with at least 21 years of age and a minimum of three years driving experience.

  • Unsupervised driving prohibits the use of cell phones, handheld video games, or any other interactive, wireless device.

Upgrading Your License

Practice unsupervised driving for 1 year, then upgrade your probationary license to a basic license online.

Contact Information

The NJMVC can be reached via phone, email, or through their website for any queries or concerns you may have.

Conclusion

New Jersey offers a well-organized system for obtaining a learner's permit or driver's license. With a range of online services and clear guidelines, the state ensures a smooth and efficient process for all applicants.
